Michelle Matthews
LCSW
I am passionate about learning tools to harness our own body’s ability to mentally and emotionally heal itself and then teaching it to clients of all ages during their therapeutic journey. I utilize the Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) technique, primarily used for treating trauma but it can be used for many other issues also. This technique activates the brain’s natural problem-solving process by adding bilateral stimulation to the right and left side of the body (tapping, sounds, vibrations, eye movement, and variations of art and movement). EMDR decreases the intensity of disturbing images, negative beliefs, and physical and emotional sensations that have disrupted clients’ lives since the traumatic event. After EMDR, most clients report a significant decrease in disturbing symptoms, an emotional “weight lifted” from them, and an increase in “hope” moving forward.
I am also trained in HeartMath, which is an excellent tool to self-regulate no matter where you are or what situation you are in. I teach HeartMath skills during sessions using an electronic biofeedback device and clients practice HeartMath (with or without a device) between sessions to build their skill.
Practicing at Oakwood Clinical Associates since 2015, I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Wisconsin (2007) and have worked in a private outpatient setting since 2008. Additionally, I provide training and individual clinical supervision to clinical interns and pre-licensed providers.
If you are ready to start a journey to harness your natural ability to heal and self-regulate, please contact Oakwood. I am honored to work with you.
